“To Change the World, I Must Love the World”

How Caleb Magnino and others like him are changing the world, one smile at a time.

It’s a common occurrence for most of us to have our pictures taken – everyone has a camera nowadays, be it professional-grade or just on our phones. As we are our own worst critics, there are times when we don’t like how we turn out when we see shots of us. Imagine, though, if the main reason you did not like to see pictures of yourself was because you hated your smile – not just because your teeth were crooked or not as white as you would want them to be, but because they were rotting and you could not afford dental care.

Caleb Magnino, Executive Director of Hope Smiles, a dental missions organization that works to bring compassionate, sustainable dental care to people in the United States, Haiti, and Uganda, knows all about the importance of a smile. At first glance, Magnino is a photographer with a great who enjoys telling stories with his photos. As if that is not wonderful enough, he is also a humanitarian with a heart to bring hope and change to the world by capturing the beauty and individual stories of the people whom he shoots with his camera.

Caleb sees his talent as a means to change the world through medical missions. He desires to encourage others to use their talents as he has, to proclaim and demonstrate the power of the Gospel.

The photographer/humanitarian considers himself a “catalytic change agent.” He says, “My gifts and talents combine to unleash the gifts and talents of others, activating them to be the change they want to see in their world. I know that there is a story, a unique narrative, that needs to be told, a world full of art and expression that needs to be created, and a future that needs to be shaped…by the Church, the Bride of Christ and all who compose her.”

We have heard so many great reports from exhibitors like Casa El Bueno Samaritano in Houston, Texas, who saw their volunteer base rise after M3.

Casa El Buen Samaritano is a 501(c) (3) organization that operates a free clinic in southwest Houston. Their missions is to share the love of Jesus Christ while providing whole-person—body, soul, spirit—healthcare to the low-income and uninsured population in our community. This dynamic ministry is having a significant impact on many needy people in our midst. On average, there are over 100 patient visits each month, many by patients who consider Casa El Buen Samaritano to be their health home.
Patients at Casa El Buen Samaritano are below 150% of federal poverty guidelines and without any form of insurance. They receive a high standard of medical care completely free of charge, including laboratory testing and medications dispensed from our pharmacy. They also have an opportunity after their medical visit to meet with a ministry volunteer and hear a personal gospel presentation. This integrated medical and spiritual ministry is transforming lives!
Casa El Buen Samaritano exists only because of the committed involvement of our wonderful supporters. All clinical care is provided by volunteers, who generously give of their time to serve those in need.  So many people got connected to Casa or similar organizations through M3!
We have extended the Early Bird Registration Deadline until January 6th.  Sign up today for the best registration price!

International Medical Outreach : Kevin’s View

Every morning, 12-year-old Kevin rises promptly with the sun to do her chores before going to school. She sweeps around the hut she shares with her sisters, gathers water from the nearby source, and washes the previous night’s dishes. After putting on her uniform, she walks to school, where she joins her friends and resumes her studies. Her favorite class, she says, is English.

This is where she and her classmates encounter International Medical Outreach when the team is on the ground in Papoga, Uganda. In Kevin’s community, IMO’s intestinal parasite prevention and treatment program aims to improve the health of these students – through medication, health education, access to clean water and shoes, and improved sanitation.

Life in Papoga is beautiful, albeit laborious and demanding. The perspective we gain from students like Kevin shows us first of all that we live utterly different lives. We appreciate that difference and, therefore, seek only a way in which our program will fit into the unique life of the community.
