In this session from the 2017 M3 Conference, Steve James shares about the work of KenyaRelief.org, which has a 15 year history of providing safe and well organized medical/surgical mission trips for more than 3,000 health care providers.
Steve James is a veteran anesthesia provider who turned tragedy into triumph by founding Kenyarelief.org after the death of his daughter in 2001. He has mastered short-term medical and surgical missions and created a safe, sustainable program involving health, education, and care of orphans and vulnerable children. He organizes over 20 teams of missionaries each year who provide free medical services including, but definitely not limited to, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and obstetrics/gynecology.

In July, Christian Health Service Corp will be offering another valuable course for all learners who want to prepare for wholistic, transformational community health and development.
Community Health Evangelism (CHE TOTI)

Looking for relevant, sustainable, reproducible approaches to address community health and development that are adaptable across multiple settings? CHE provides a strategy for community based transformational development founded on the core values of integration and wholism, commitment to the poor and marginalized, long-term solutions, local ownership and initiative, participatory learning, multiplication, servant leadership, and contextualization.
Participants in the highly interactive CHE Training of Trainers 1 (CHE TOT1) will learn approaches to teaching physical and spiritual topics that equip individuals and communities to identify issues and mobilize resources for positive growth and development. Participatory learning activities are employed through large and small group discussions, various hands-on activities, and methods that can be replicated in the community setting. Upon completion of the CHE TOT1, participants will become members of the Global CHE Network and have access to more than 10,000 lessons and teaching aids.

This program is held at CHSC Shalom Retreat and Training Center from 8-5 daily. Participants are encouraged to arrive on July 11 and depart on July 16 to fully enjoy Shalom’s facilities and participate in all course activities. The program cost of $580 covers tuition, room (shared) and board from dinner July 11 through breakfast July 16, and the Global CHE Network flash drive with lessons and teaching aids. Prepare to provide quality care in resource-limited cross-cultural settings. Designed for all healthcare providers and students, the Village Healthcare Intensive is divided in two sections that may be taken together or separately. We recommend taking the sections sequentially.
Section 1 – Global Health Principles and Practice – June 20-24, 2017
How do we evaluate malnutrition? What are the World Health Organization guidelines for maternal and child care? Gain resources and skills to apply international standards for whole-person care in developing communities. Lectures, discussions, case studies, and workshops highlight approaches to evaluation and management with limited resources and practical skills such as suturing.
Section 2 – Tropical Medicine Overview – June 26-30, 2017
From Ascariasis to Zika, this section offers an overview of common tropical diseases in a case-based format. Enhance your approach to pathologies causing morbidity and mortality in developing communities and augment your clinical acumen with contextually appropriate education and development techniques.

Conviventia aids victims of mudslide in Columbia
On Saturday, April 1, while many families were asleep in their homes, a giant wall of water, mud and debris from a horrific mudslide devastated the town of Mocoa in southern Colombia. Over 270 people are dead, with 400 injured and over 200 missing. Conviventia is doing what we can to bring urgent emergency relief of food, medicines, blankets, personal care and hygiene products and temporary housing, and hope to these communities as they begin to dig out from this awful tragedy.
While we are initially focused on the day to day emergency assistance needed for these children and families, there will also be needed support to help these families to rebuild their lives and their homes. This project will work with the local organizations and churches to strengthen their capacity to provide ongoing support to their communities. We will also assess what is needed for a second phase intervention to support shelter and reconstruction efforts.
