2019 M3 Breakout Session – Matthew Dacso, MD, MSc, FACP
We are excited to release this 2019 M3 Conference Breakout Session by Dr. Matthew Dacso, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director at the Center for Global Health Education at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), entitled “Bonded Through Service – Exploring Synergies between Academic and Faith-Based Organizations in Global Health.”
In this session, Dr. Dacso will discuss how every year, over 1.5 million Americans participate in short-term international faith-based mission trips. Similarly, nearly one in every three medical students participates in a global health elective during their medical training. Meanwhile, the past few decades have seen profound epidemiologic transitions in the global burden of disease complicated by persistent global disparities in the distribution of wealth and human resources for health. The need to address these complex health system issues, coupled with increased interest among volunteers and the ease of international travel, have driven both academic institutions and faith-based organizations to create and expand global health programs. Yet despite significant overlap in their mission areas, these entities frequently work in professional silos. This talk explores the shared values, as well as the challenges and opportunities for developing joint programming between academic and faith-based organizations.

2019 M3 Conference Videos Released!
We are excited to announce that the M3 Conference video and audio files have been released! An email was sent to all conference attendees with a link to the files. We will also be releasing one each Monday, starting with this inspiring session led by Dr. Anne Alaniz entitled “What’s in Your Hands? A Journey Out of the Village.” Anne Alaniz, DO, is the Co-Founder of Pothawira (Safe Haven) in Malawi and a Gynecologic Oncologist at Houston Methodist.
In this plenary session from the 2019 conference, Dr. Alaniz shares how a 17 year old girl from a small village in Malawi, Africa with no name, no money and no roots becomes a gynecologic oncologist in the United States of America. And beyond that accomplishment, she becomes co-founder of an organization in her home village that now cares for orphans, widows and the sick. Follow the journey of God’s grace and provision for His call of obedience to a village girl who thought her hands were empty, but God knew she had everything He needed to accomplish what seemed impossible.

M3 Conference Collaboration at its Best!
“Just say yes” doesn’t mean you have to be a missionary “in” Africa. M3 friend, Linda Moore, said “yes” and utilized her relational gift of networking to connect Texas, Alaska and Africa.
Linda and her husband, Randy, have been leading mission teams from Texas to Alaska for several years, and in that time, have enjoyed getting to know MCA Church, Alaska Medical Missions and their respective teams. Linda and Randy have played an integral role in preparing to bring the first Champions Club for special needs children to Alaska, which will be housed at MCA Church. Two years ago, they had the pleasure of meeting M3 Conference speaker Dr. Anne Alaniz, who is also the Co-Founder of Pothawira (Safe Haven) in Malawi, Africa. Then, leading up to this past M3 Conference, they made a connection with Judah 1.
In God’s perfect plan, four of these organizations – Alaska Medical Missions, Champions Club, Pothawira and Judah 1 – were exhibitors at the 2019 M3 Conference, and that’s when the pieces started falling into place. With her special insight, Linda went to work introducing and connecting these organizations, and on June 23rd in Anchorage, Alaska, this beautiful collaboration came full circle. Judah 1 took the needed equipment and supplies for the Champions Club from Texas to Alaska, and then successfully loaded up 25 ICU baby cribs onto Judah 1’s aircraft, which were supplied by Alaska Medical Missions, to be taken to Malawi, Africa, where they will be utilized at the Pothawira (Safe Haven) clinic.
As Linda says, “No human can possibly take credit for the blessing that took place.”

Dr. Paul Osteen Teaching with PAACS at Mukinge
As Dr. Paul Osteen serves the beautiful people of Zambia at Mukinge Mission Hospital, he is also able to help teach in-country doctors through the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) surgical residency program. In this picture, Dr. Paul is working with Dr. Kimutai, a 4th year resident from PAACS on his rural hospital rotation at Mukinge.
