Laura Smelter, MD

Laura Smelter MD serves as Director of Training, designing and coordinating programs, at Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) a healthcare missions-sending and training organization. She also works with the John Peter Smith Family Medicine Residency Program in Fort Worth, TX and volunteers with the University of Texas Southwestern Christian Fellowship. She is a member of CMDA, AAFP, Texas Medical Association, and is a Working Group Member of Christian Connections for International Health (CCIH).

Dr Smelter received her BS in Molecular Biology/Pre-Med with a minor in Religion from Grove City College and her MD from MCP-Hahnemann University School of Medicine. Her career as a family physician has provided national and international, rural and urban, clinical, academic, and administrative experience. This has included serving as the Family Medicine Residency Director at ECWA Hospital, Egbe, Nigeria and Associate Director at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program in South Bend, IN.

Dr Smelter has a passion to help educate, equip, and edify short and long-term healthcare missionaries, and is well prepared for her role with CHSC having served overseas, and presented at conferences nationally and internationally on a range of subjects, including disaster response, tropical medicine, community health, global health, and teaching critical thinking in cross-cultural situations.
